Union Civil War Prisoners Of War

originally buried in the

"Potter's Field" Cemetery

Charleston, South Carolina

and later re-interred at the

Beaufort National Cemetery, SC

“If I live to see the return of peace, your deeds shall be recorded for your honor and the everlasting remembrance of the nation" Mrs. Eliza Potter

A total of 257 Union soldiers were buried in Potter's Field Cemetery, Charleston, SC. This cemetery was also referred to as the Race-Course Cemetery and Charleston National Cemetery.

Most of these burials were prisoners from the Charleston Race Course prison and hospital and other Charleston area hospitals.

All of the following names appear on a marble tablet in the Beaufort National Cemetery. The tablet is located in Section 64. All of these soldiers are buried as Unknowns in Section 64.

BEAUFORT.JPG

The tablet, as well as a tall granite obelisk, were erected in Beaufort National Cemetery by Mrs. Eliza Potter who lived in Charleston and cared for the wounded & sick throughout the war. The tablet states that along with these identified soldiers there were hundreds of others buried from Charleston in the cemetery as well.

The tablet is divided into sections by the State from which they served. There is also a section of soldiers who are not assigned to any State.

Unfortunately, there are mistakes on the tablet due to transcription errors and lack of information at that time. These mistakes include spelling errors, soldiers listed under the wrong state, and in some cases duplicate names with different spellings. Even the Roll of Honor for the "Charleston National Cemetery" contains duplicate names, with the same death dates but serving in different regiments. This makes it very challenging to confirm many of the soldiers on the tablet.

There may be mistakes by me in the identification of some of names on the tablet, but I have done my best by comparing multiple sources. This is ongoing research and corrections are made as new information becomes available. Some of the names may never be identified.

If you have information relating to any of the following soldiers or any Union soldier who died in Charleston, please contact Edward Boots.
